Why, exactly, are we getting Moreno-Figueiredo 3?

UFC 269 on December 11th is a near-perfect year-end fight card.
You have Oliveira-Poirier for the lightweight title, which is the fight that should've been made for the belt in the first place, instead of Oliveira-Chandler. You have Cody Garbrandt's flyweight debut. You have Sean O'Malley taking on a ranked opponent. You have the return of Dominick Cruz. And you have the Lioness in action- Amanda Nunes, the greatest women's mixed martial artist (or on the shortlist).

There's one bout, however, that I'm not excited about- Brandon Moreno will be defending his flyweight belt against the top contender... Deiveson Figueiredo in an immediate rematch.

I'm sorry... what?
Why is this happening?

Here are a few reasons why I'm not looking forward to this bout.

1. Immediate rematches should only be for dominant champions.
Let's look at a quick timeline, shall we?
February 2020: Figueiredo takes on Joseph Benavidez for the vacant title. Figueiredo wins but the title remains vacant as he missed weight.
July 2020: Figueiredo makes weight and stops Benavidez to win the title.
November 2020: Figueiredo stops Alex Perez in his first title defense.
December 2020: Figueiredo retains the belt in a draw against Moreno.
June: Moreno submits Figueiredo to win the belt.
So, in five title fights, Figueiredo won twice while being ineligible once, defended once, retained once and lost once. That doesn't scream "dominant champion" to me. Demetrious Johnson defended the flyweight title eleven times during his UFC run. I'm of the mind that he would've rematched Cejudo- especially given the split decision nod- if he hadn't been traded to ONE Championship.

2. There's a host of deserving contenders.
Askar Askarov is 14-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the UFC, with his last three bouts being wins over Tim Elliott, Alexandre Pantoja and Joseph Benavidez.
Alexandre Pantoja has won two straight and has two Performance of the Night bonuses in his last four bouts. Plus, he has a win over Brandon Moreno from 2018.
Then there's Alex Perez, Brandon Royval and Kai Kara-France who are next in the rankings.

3. We really don't need another Cormier-Miocic type logjam.
The big issue with the Cormier-Miocic trilogy from 2018 to last year was that it left the other contenders in limbo. Their decision was either "don't get paid for up to a year" or "take a fight in the meantime and risk losing my title shot".
*Askarov and Perez are in the same boat that Ngannou was in last year. Either they wait until mid-2022 without a paycheck but maintain their place in the rankings or they sign the contract for an interim fight and risk losing their spot.

Seriously, why not have Moreno-Askarov or Moreno-Perez in December? Figueiredo basically got this trilogy fight by complaining about not getting a third fight quick enough- more on this in another post.
